About

Anita Sharma Headshot March 2021.jpeg

If you find yourself, your kids or your family feeling worried, anxious, depressed or in a life transition, I can support your family with new tools and ways of thinking.  My specialty is working with school-aged children and youth who have mental health needs, such as excessive worry, depression or low school attendance, and, helping them meet their wellness goals.  Some of these goals could include managing anxiety, improving peer relations, or attending school regularly.  I have worked with children transitioning from elite sport, high academic achievers experiencing panic/anxiety, those who have experienced trauma, family separation, children with formal diagnosis such as Selective Mutism, autism, Developmental Disabilities and Downs Syndrome.

I also provide counselling for expectant or new mothers transitioning through the experiences of their new role, stressors of pregnancy, and the rapid changes that may impact your pre-natal and post-partum experiences. I provide a safe space for soon to be mothers to develop techniques that positively impact their anxiety.

Approach

I have worked in the mental health field since 2005 and my passion work is in the area of supporting children, youth and expectant/new mothers who are experiencing anxiety or depression which impacts in daily life functioning.

The modalities I use include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to support new ways of thinking, Attachment Therapy to help families achieve their mental wellness goals in a harmonious way, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, evidenced to help with mood regulation, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to learn how your mind notices things which are positive and negative and impact the feelings you subsequently experience.

Philosophy of Families First

Families are diverse, I work with intergenerational family units, adoptive families and other caregiver situations.

We are all impacted by our family experiences and the intergenerational beliefs held before us.  Family systems maintain our ways of understanding and approaching the world, hence, helping families to meet their goals is key to developing change and improvement in mental health.  Instead of focusing just on children's behaviours, I bring a focus of how precursors in family attachment relationships factors into effective treatment within a child and family therapy context.
